They say the devil is in the detail and when it comes to interiors, that means colours, patterns, materials and textures! This is even more important when working with a monochrome palette. Surprisingly, the more paired back the style the harder it is to look polished. But don’t panic, I have a few simple tricks to help you make all your rooms look professionally designed.
Tip 1. Avoid using the same type of fabric for everything! If your sofa is a woven cotton then contrast your scatter cushions in velvets and silks.
Tip 2. I love a statement armchair and velvet is always a fun way to add a bit of luxury to your room. But don’t forget, its scatter cushion should be a contrasting texture.
Tip 3. Is all your furniture raw timber? Why not paint some of it! This is a great way to add colour and also avoids having a room full of matching items.
Tip 4. Metals are a great contrast to fabrics. Your room can be pulled together by using the same metal within a; mirror frame, light fittings and even cabinet handles.
Tip 5. Wool is a fantastic fabric and can make a room feel really cosy. How about a throw or maybe a pair of statement curtains!
Tip 6. Don’t forget, opposites attract. Pair shiny and matte items together, smooth and rough, opaque and transparent.
Layering and adding to your room can happen over time so don’t feel pressure to get it all done at once. The most important thing is to have fun.
