STYLING WINDOWS
SEPTEMBER 2023
Curtains and blinds are a versatile component to any room. They can provide privacy, insulation, block light and can be a real statement piece within a room. They can make a space feel contemporary or traditional and can even make a room feel smaller or larger. The quality of your curtains and blinds is so important and is an area I would recommend investing in.
Are you lacking space or don’t want your window treatment to be a focal point? I would suggest Roman blinds. These can be fitted inside or outside the window reveal, however if you want your blinds to block out the light, I would suggest fitting them outside. The benefit of Roman blinds is that they don’t cover radiators below meaning your bedroom will remain warm throughout the night. Roman blinds work well in both contemporary and traditional spaces.
Curtains can make a room feel really cosy and if you chose a statement fabric can be a great feature. I would always recommend full length curtains as anything shorter tends to look like a mistake. If you want added drama why not make them even longer so they puddle on the floor? Both the curtain pole and heading type can change the style dramatically so decide if your room is traditional or contemporary before you choose your curtain set. For a contemporary room, use a flush ceiling track and a wave heading. For a traditional room use a curtain pole (30-50mm diameter works well) with finials and either a goblet pleat or a double or triple pinch pleat.
For a real statement, fill a whole wall with your curtains. It will make the room feel bigger but it will also make the space feel really cosy.
If your room is north facing or is particularly dark, make sure to elongate the curtain pole past the window reveal by approximately 200mm each side, this should provide enough space to stack the curtains and shouldn’t block too much of the window and the light.
At Fiona Bateman Interiors we offer a complete window treatment service where we will help and advise you in choosing each component that makes up your curtains or blinds. We will also measure for and install your new window treatments. How easy is that?!
